What are AAC, AIF and MP3 and how do they differ

I reworked the song Bridge and Tunnel by The Honorary Title four times. AAC is Advanced Audio Coding it is supposed to be the advanced version of an Mp3 mine had a 7.7 mb size. MP3 or also MPEG is Moving Picture Experts Group, with good quality it had a 4.5 mb size. MP3 with higher quality had a 5.4 mb size. AIFF stands for auto interchange file format and has a mb size of 39.6. When listening to all four versions there only seemed to be a slight difference at least to my ears. The differences between the two MP3 files was that the good quality was a little softer sounding and flat but with the higher quality it was not only louder but slightly clearer then the good version. AAC compared to the Mp3's was that it was sharper sounding. The AIFF once i really listened sounded similar to the higher quality MP3. I assumed that with the higher mb's it would have a better sound but it doesnt it has the same as the 5.4mb MP3. If I were to rip all my cds I would do the higher quality MP3 because it takes up lees space and still has a decent sound compared to a AIFF file.
